Maritime law enforcement integration will help permit China to take the following three-tier maritime security approach: (1) MSA and former Customs and BCD vessels handle issues in Chinese territorial waters out to 12 nautical miles, (2) former CMS and FLEC vessels play substantive roles out to 200 nautical miles in China’s claimed Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the Near Seas (Yellow, East China, and South China Seas), and (3) Chinese naval vessels are better able to focus efforts further afield.
